THE CURRENCY CABINET / FIELD NOTES
The stories behind the shirts
Eight notes, eight departures. Open a specimen to discover its currency and the art it inspired.
01 — Zonnebloem
Netherlands · 1982 · 50 gulden
Fifty gulden, payable in sunlight. The Dutch sunflower note turns a familiar denomination into a bright botanical encounter, complete with a bee. Our issue lets the flower grow beyond the note’s borders, carrying its yellow, orange, green, and violet into a bold back print.
02 — Pacific Tender
French Pacific territories · 1,000 francs
A banknote can hold a geography as readily as a value. This hibiscus issue brings island life and tropical flowers into the daily traffic of money. The shirt opens that little paper world into foliage, mountains, and curling water, with coral and teal carrying the warmth.
03 — The Allegory
France · 100 francs · Merson design
A hundred francs with the bearing of a public painting. The Merson note gives agriculture and commerce human form through classical allegory. Blue and terracotta drapery, wheat, and flowers become a quieter composition on the back: an invitation to notice the imagination once tucked into everyday exchange.
04 — Alpine Ammonite
Switzerland · 20 francs · 1976 series
A sea creature in the high mountains. The Swiss note brings Alpine exploration and an ammonite into the same small field of paper. Our spiral and peaks hold those two scales of time together: the mountain invites a climb; the fossil asks you to look much further back.
05 — Emergency Tender
Bevern, Germany · 1921 · 25 pfennig
Emergency money, with a woodland inhabitant. Notgeld was local currency outside the usual national issue, and this Bevern specimen makes room for a gnome and a mushroom. The back follows him into a larger storybook forest of red caps, moss, and thoroughly unreasonable fungi.
06 — The Dragon Issue
Bhutan · 1986 · 1 ngultrum
A modest denomination; an immodest escort. The facing dragons on this note carry Bhutan’s thunder-dragon symbolism into a very small sum. Our paired guardians uncoil around a golden pearl through pale clouds and orange ornament, giving the original emblem a wider field.
07 — Electricity
United States · 1896 · $5 Silver Certificate
The invisible force acquired a body. The Educational Series used classical allegory to give science and progress a human presence. Our Electricity rises through lightning, radiant arcs, and stars in charcoal, ivory, and muted gold, carrying the certificate’s engraved drama into a wearable silhouette.
08 — Okzhetpes
Kazakhstan · 1993 · 10 tenge
A scholar on one side, a mountain on the other. Kazakhstan’s first national-currency series pairs Shoqan Walikhanov’s portrait with Okzhetpes in the lake country of Burabay. The chest keeps the portrait close; the back follows stone, pines, blue-green water, and ornament into the landscape.
